Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an amorphous thermoplastic that provides high light transmission with a refractive index of 1.49 and can be easily thermoformed without loss of optical clarity. Prolonged exposure to moisture, or even total immersion in water, does not significantly affect the mechanical or optical properties of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA). Most commercial acrylics have been UV stabilized for good weathering and resistance to prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is unaffected by aqueous solutions of most laboratory chemicals, cleaning agents, detergents, dilute inorganic acids, alkalis and aliphatic hydrocarbons – but acrylics are NOT recommended for use with chlorinated or aromatic hydrocarbons, esters or ketones.
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is easy to saw, drill, mill, engrave and sharpen carbide tips. Cutting surfaces can be easily ground and polished. They are also easy to bend or thermoform at low temperature and solvent bonding of properly fitting parts provides a strong, invisible joint. Acrylic is available in colorless clear and a variety of colors and shades. They are available in extruded and/or cast material in plates, rods and tubes as well as special profiles.
