Acetal (POM) – plastic that is versatile and easy to work with

Polyoxymethylene, POM (both homo- & copolymer), is perhaps better known as Delrin (POM-H) or Acetal (POM-C). It is often used in plain bearings, fine mechanical parts, and impellers.

POM (Acetal) is a thermoplastic that has very good mechanical properties. Although it is white in its natural form, thermoplastic is available in several colors. It is effortless to work with and is characterized as a hard dimensionally stable all-around material.

Acetal plastic possesses an excellent combination of stiffness, toughness, fatigue strength, and resilience properties. Therefore, it is well suited for tough environments that require high-quality details.

Acetal plastic can be:

  • Vacuum metalized
  • Extracted
  • Embossed
  • Injection-molded
  • Electroplated
  • Welded
  • Machined
  • Cut
  • Blow-molded

The plastic is similar to polyamide in several respects but differs by being slightly stiffer and harder. In addition, POM plastic is more dimensionally stable as it has a low water absorption. This plastic is well suited for automatic turning and is recommended for precision parts with tight tolerances.

Acetal plastic withstands an alkaline environment up to pH 12 and can be used at temperatures up to +105°C, depending on stabilization and requirements for its service life.

Areas of use for acetal plastic:

  • Gear
  • Controls
  • Impeller
  • Rolls
  • Rails
  • Snap cap
  • Valve block
  • Palettes
  • Fixtures

Acetal in the food industry

Acetal POM-C FG (Food Grade) is a general purpose, copolymer acetal grade that is favored for its porosity free nature, as well as its higher resistance to hydrolysis, strong alkalis, and thermal oxidative degradation than homopolymer acetal grades.

These food grade, POM-C shapes also offer low moisture absorption and excellent machinability capabilities, making it a very versatile material that can excel in a multitude of environments. Due to these characteristics and their compliance with compositional FDA 21 CFR § 177.2470, EU 10/2011, USDA, NSF, Canada AG, and 3A-Dairy requirements, components made from this material are used frequently for food contact applications.
