General facts

Silicone, glass fabric reinforced

Shortening: SI

Structural formula: Tempered plastic based on glass fabric soaked with silicone resin.

Color: White, Light green

Coloring options: Several

Common uses: SI GC 202 suitable for insulating materials for high frequency applications in the electricity industry. Used with advantage at elevated temperatures. Temperature class H (180 degrees C)

Benefits

  • Solid knowledge of the material’s production and its uses.
  • An overall better use economy than when using thermoplastics (high temperatures).
  • Excellent adhesion to other materials.
  • High dimensional stability.
  • Good opportunities for everything from thin-walled to thick-walled constructions.
  • Due to strong internal bonds Si-O, the material acquires high resistance to temperature, ambient environment and
  • UV radiation.

Restrictions

  • Recycling not possible.
  • Cannot be reshaped after detailed production (not thermoforming).
  • Moisture absorption gives deteriorated mechanical properties.
  • Less resistant to impact.
  • Difficulty obtaining high surface finish.

Specific properties

This thermosetting plastic is made of glass fabric soaked with silicone resin. The material is rigid and can withstand high temperatures. In addition, the material has very good electrical insulation, especially at high frequencies. Note that its mechanical strength is slightly less than with other glass fabric laminates.

Temperature resistance is high. Continuous use temperature is about + 200ºC and the material largely retains its mechanical and electrical values up to this temperature.

Some reduced stiffness may occur with continuous use up to the temperature limit, which must be taken into account. The material can be exposed to a temperature of approx. + 240ºC for a short time. Its ability to resist ignition is high.

In applications that involve exposure to microwave and RF equipment for, for example, medical technology use and food manufacturing, the material is an excellent choice. Note the material’s low tan D-value, which means that the material does not
heated in high frequency applications.
