Thermoplastics
Thermoplastics consist of linear or branched polymer chains that are held together by intermolecular forces. These materials can be melted and reformed without altering their chemical structure, unlike thermosets, which cannot be remelted without compromising their integrity.
In theory, thermoplastics can be recycled and reprocessed into new products multiple times. However, over time, the material’s long molecular chains degrade due to exposure to heat, oxygen, UV radiation, and chemical contaminants, leading to a gradual decline in its properties with each remelting.
Thermosets
A thermoset is a polymer composed of cross-linked molecules arranged in a three-dimensional network. This “curing” process permanently bonds the molecular chains, making the material rigid and stable. The tightly interwoven structure of thermosets prevents the polymer chains from separating, even when heated.
As a result, thermosets cannot be remelted or reformed by heating, which limits their recyclability compared to thermoplastics. However, thermosets can be ground into chips or powder, which can then be used as filler or reinforcing material in the production of new products.
